Event: Practicing Enterprise Architecture (28 Mar 2014)
Modeling is a very important element of TOGAF. Although TOGAF has been very well established as an enterprise architecture framework and methodology, by itself it does not provide any modeling tool. Until recently, we have relied on traditional business study or system development tools like strategy map, organization chart, workflow diagram, entity relationship diagram, matrix and list etc., which are not specifically designed for enterprise architecture modeling work. Open Group, the same organization who owns TOGAF, took over the modeling language ArchiMate in 2009 and has since developed it into a very comprehensive and easy to use architecture modeling language.p>

Event Highlight: GS1 HK Internet of Things (IoT) Center Tour (9 Jan 2014)
The half-day tour to GS1 HK IoT Center was held successfully on 9 Jan 2014. This IoT Center is around 2000 – 3000 square feet divided into 5 thematic zones including manufacturing, logistics, retail, healthcare and smart city with total 40 IoT solutions. It was our pleasure to have KK Suen, Chief Architect and Principal Consultant at GS1 HK giving us a very impressive introductory to IoT and its history. All of the audience feedback was good and learnt a lot.

Cloud Computing and Enterprise Architecture SIG has organized a half-day tour to GS1 HK IoT Center. Event Highlight: Cyber Security strengthening through Cultural Change (6 Nov 2013)
It was our pleasure to have Ms Claire Fulford, Group IT Manager – Cyber Security at CLP, speak with us on the Cyber Security strengthening through Cultural Change on 6 November 2013 (7pm) in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Claire has responsibility for governing the direction of policy, standards, and technologies for the protection of CLP’s critical infrastructure and information assets. Claire’s focus reaches beyond technology to the people and processes supporting CLP’s operations in China, India, Hong Kong and Australia.
In this speaker session, Claire gave a sharing on working with staff across the business and the region on initiatives focusing on a long term strategy for cyber security cultural change at CLP. She explained the journey of engaging leaders, understanding resistance points and the objectives of the program. She also presented key success factors, business benefits and finally the challenges faced in taking staff from awareness to commitment to a more cyber secure employee community.
The seminar was well received with over 30 IT architects and managers. We had a fruitful interactive Q&A session where Claire discussed with the audience on how to tackle the resistence from business stakeholders on adopting cyber security. She also provided her views on different aspects of cyber security awareness program and the importance of face-to-face conversations and training.

Event Highlight: AEA-HK Annual General meeting (4 Oct 2013)
AEA-HK Annual General meeting 2013 has been held successfully on 4 Oct 2013 with executive committee members join in. We are pleased to see some new faces and EA enthusiast to join our EX-CO. In the meeting, we have reviewed our events organized in the last 2 years and also discussed the upcoming association’s direction and future events initiatives. In the end of the session, our new Ex-Co member and SIG of Archimate, Rico presented his EA framework in the property industry with the use of Archimate.

Event Highlight: Architecture and Practices on Cloud Interoperability and Portability (24 Sep 2013)
This speaker session was a joint event by EASIG, CCSIG, and AEA HK. Dr Thomas Lee, Chairperson of EASIG and Application Architecture Manager of Airport Authority Hong Kong, shared his experience in serving on the Working Group on Cloud Computing Interoperability Standards under the Office of Government CIO. He believed cloud computing would become the next big Internet wave, bringing about another economic revolution when key interoperability issues could be resolved.
Dr Lee explained the fundamental concepts of cloud interoperability and portability, and talked about the reference architectures and architectural principles for designing interoperable cloud applications. In particular, he introduced the Open Group Guide on Cloud Computing Portability and Interoperability. He expressed that architects could develop enterprise architecture and standards for cloud adoption based on similar resources from many local and international cloud initiatives. He thought they could also make contributions by sharing their cloud adoption experience through these initiatives.
The event was well received and attracted a large audience of IT architects, managers and consultants. Concluding the talk, Dr C.K. Wong, Advisor of EASIG and CCSIG, shared his views on how local IT vendors might capture new opportunities in the China market through developing cloud service components.

Event: Architecture and Practices on Cloud Interoperability and Portability (24 Sep 2013)
AEA-HK and HKCS co-organized a seminar on “Architecture and Practices on Cloud Interoperability and Portability”. In this session, Dr Thomas Lee shares his experience in working in WGCCIS as a co-opt member and introduces the Open Group Guide on Cloud Computing Portability and Interoperability. He explains the fundamental concepts of cloud interoperability and portability and the reference architecture to design interoperable interfaces between on-premise and cloud application components. He also discusses the architectural principles for supporting cloud service providers to develop interoperable cloud services. From the enterprise user perspective, he also summarizes some good practices from the Open Group Guide that help cloud consumers to formulate their cloud strategy to manage vendor lock-in when selecting cloud services.

AEA-HK Annual General Meeting and EXCO 2014-2016 (4 Oct 2013 19:00)
Dear AEA-HK Committee / Members / IT Architects,
Association of Enterprise Architect, HK Chapter was founded and formed in 2011 by a group of EA enthusiast in HK. In the past 2 years, we have organized over 6 events and supporting over 10 events worldwide. The EA half-day seminar event on 11 July 2012 co-organized with HK Computer Society have over 100 EA practioners to join.
In terms of popularity, we have over 170 members in our Linkedin group and 50 likes in our facebook page (as of 30 Aug 2013). We have kept a good image and connections with the HK companies currently adopting or interested in EA.
It is time to plan for the next 3 years 2014-2016. I understand that many of you may interest in joining us as committee members, please kindly join our annual general meeting (AGM) of AEA-HK and this is a very important meeting to us, so I recommend all of you joining.

Event Highlight: Framework Adoption for Java Enterprise Application Development (13 Jun 2013)
In this speaker session, Clarence gave a high-level comparison on the features among various Java and open source development frameworks in the market, such as JEE and Spring. He also shared a case study by reviewing a project that he had done before in a large-scale mission critical banking project. He explained the high-level application architecture, lessons learnt on the adoption of different open source technologies and the rationale behind some major architectural decisions.
The seminar was well received with a full house of over 50 IT architects and managers from more than 20 organizations. We had a fruitful interactive Q&A session where Clarence discussed with the audience on the criteria of choosing a good and suitable framework. He also addressed the concerns of open source framework support and provided his views on the differences between .NET and Java frameworks.
